To be put on a list of people most likely to be chosen for something，a list that has been winnowed from a longer one．For example，several novels are short—listed each year for Britain’s prestigious Booker Prize，and from this short tist a winner is selected．The expression is not a new one，dating back about seventy—five years，and is becoming familiar in the United States．
