Originally kahuna meant“a priest or wise man”；then，in the 1950s，it also came to mean an expert surfer，and by the 1980s it took on the meaning of“an important person or thing，”this last usually in the form of big kahuna：“He’s the big kahuna around here．”

Kahuna一词的意义几经变化。此词原为“牧师，聪明人”之意；在20世纪50年代，是指“冲浪运动员”；到20世纪80年代，此词有了“大人物”的意思。作为“大人物”之意，前面往往加上big一词，即成为big kahuna，如：“他是这里的大人物。”
