A courtesy title used after someone’s name．Esquire is mainly used in A merican English today as a title of respect after an attorney’s name，a usage applied to both male and female lawyers in recent times．In British English，however，the title is commonly used after the name of any man．Esquire began life as the title given to a knight’s personal attendant，one training to be a knight himself．Such attendants carried the knight’s shield，hence their name，from the Old English esquier，shield bearer．
