When geese are plucked，the thousands of tiny muscles that pull their feathers erect to form a natural insulation system continue to contract in the cold．The contracted muscles look like bumpy，pimply skin on a bare bird and as far back as the seventeenth century suggested the bumps onhuman skin caused by cold or fear．However，although the term goose pimples was invented in England，the British now use chicken flesh in its place．Americans have stuck with goose pimples；also goose bumps．
