Sjambok，for“a rhino—hide whip，”is said to come from the Malay language．The word，however，is associated with the Boers of South Africa，sjambok rule meaning a repressive，tyrannical rule of whips and violence．The word is an international one，recorded in the dictionaries of many languages．It seems to have come into English in the first quarter of the nineteenth century．
