This commonly used epithet is not taken too seriously in northern New England，where it is heard most frequently．It does yeoman service in describing everything from a beloved friend(“How are you，you old son of a whore?”)to an avowed enemy，and is applied to situations of good luck as well as bad luck，even to women as well as men．This is not to say，however，that someone might not take extreme exception to the term．
