Tor may be one of the first words spoken in England．Generally held to be a Celtic term used in place names，it may be a remnant of the prehistoric language of Bronze Age people on the island．These tribesmen lacked writing to record their language but may have used tor as a place narne that the Celts somehow adopted．Tor has come to mean“a high rock，a pile of rocks．”
