A person of rigid puritanical habits．The term was first applied to lumbermen and fishermen of northern New England and referred to the color of their noses，the blue induced by long exposure to cold weather．Later the word was applied to the aristocratic inhabitants of Boston’s Back Bay area，possibly in allusion to their apparently“frigid“manner．Bluenose also is used as an opprobrious nickname for Nova Scotians，but there the word probably derives from the name of a popular Nova Scotian potato．
