Darby and Joan
Any mutually affectionate and contented old married couple.
Old Darby, with Joan by his side,
You’re often regarded with wonder:
He’s dropsical,she is sore—eyed,
Yet they’re never happy asunder.
This verse by Henry Woodfall was printed in the Gentleman’s Magazine in 1735 under the title of“The Joys of Love Never Forgot:a song.”The ballad praises,in a number of stanzas,John Darby and his wife Joan, who lived in London.Woodfall had served an apprenticeship under John Darby, who, with his wife, were widely known for their good works and faithfulness. The term has little currency in the United States.
